Eons after humanity vanished from the face of the Earth, coral reefs developed enough complexity to become sentient, forming vast, aquatic brains. The eye is a sense organ developed by evolution time-and-again as the brain's window into the world. And so it was that reefs themselves gained the gift of sight.
